What to Do in an Emergency: Quick System Isolation Guide
If a sprinkler head accidentally discharges or a pipe breaks, quick action can reduce water damage and protect your property until help arrives. Only attempt these steps after determining it is safe to do so. Here’s what you can do:
1. Stay Calm and Ensure Safety
Evacuate the area if necessary and ensure there are no fire risks. If the accidental discharge has triggered your fire alarm system, expect the fire department to arrive quickly.
2. Locate the Main Control Valve
The Main Control Valve is typically a butterfly or OS&Y valve located near the system riser—often in a sprinkler riser room or mechanical room. If you are on a higher floor, the floor control valve may be located in the stairwell.
3. Shut Off the Water Supply, Open Main Drain
Turn the control valve clockwise (to the right) to close it. This will stop the flow of water to the sprinkler system. The water remaining in the system will continue to flow out through the burst pipe or sprinkler head – opening the main drain will clear the water from the system faster, with less water damage.
4. Call Elite Mechanical Services Immediately
Once the system is isolated, call our emergency hotline 248-621-9294 so our team can be dispatched to repair and restore your system.
